群れで行動する象に似ていることからエレファント・ウォークといわれる訓練があります。

多数の航空機が象の群れの様に滑走路を進み、その後、次々と短時間で離陸していく訓練です。

エレファント・ウォークとは

エレファント・ウォークとは、多数の航空機が滑走路でタキシング（地上滑走）し短時間で次々と離陸することで、多数の航空機を同時に運用する能力や多数の航空機を短時間で離陸させる即応態勢を確認する訓練のひとつです。

象が群れで歩く様子に似ていることからエレファント・ウォークと呼ばれているようです。

エレファント・ウォークの大きな行動は、次の2つです。

多数の航空機が、滑走路上をまさに象の群れのように整然と移動すること
多数の航空機が、次々と滑走、離陸すること

なお、エレファント・ウォークに使用する機体や順番は任意のようです。

エレファント・ウォークにより得られる成果

エレファント・ウォークでは、複数の飛行隊から同時に航空機を発進させることで、様々な課題が浮かび上がります。

各飛行隊は、パイロットや指揮管制チームに加え、メンテナンスの専門家の能力を評価することができます。

ここでは、全翼機でステルスの戦略爆撃機B-2スピリットのエレファント・ウォークについて説明します。

B-2スピリットとは

B-2スピリットは、米国の戦略爆撃機です。

現在、米国の戦略爆撃機部隊は、現在のB-1Bランサー、B-2スピリット、B-52Hストラトフォートレスの3機種から、開発中のB-21レイダーとB-52Hストラトフォートレスの2機種体制に変わっていくようです。

下図は、ステルスの戦略爆撃機B-2スピリットです。

垂直尾翼と水平尾翼のない全翼機の機体です。
